The Lynn Smith diaries, correspondence, photographs and financial records form a major part of the Herbert Heller Collection. The collection also contains a series of manuscripts entitled "Historical Remembrances" of other Alaskan Pioneers. The last part of the collection consists of Heller's personal correspondence, memorabilia, pamphlets, etc. relating to Alaska Methodist University.

Herbert Heller (d. 1983) joined the faculty of Baldwin-Wallace College in 1965 as associate professor of education, and retired in 1973, serving as professor emeritus of education until his death. Francois (Frank) Buteau (1856-1937) was born in Quebec. He immigrated to the United States in 1877 and arrived in Juneau, Alaska, in 1886.
